Michaela Pfadenhauer is Professor for Sociology at Karlsruhe University / Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She studied Political Science and Sociology at University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, University of Bamberg and LMU Munich. After her diploma at Bamberg University she held positions as research assistant in Munich (1994-97), in St. Gallen, Switzerland (2002-2003) and in Dortmund (1997-2002 and 2003-2007). She completed her PhD at Dortmund University (Sociology; summa cum laude).

She was a Review Editor for the Sociological peer review journal Soziale Welt (Social World). Since 2006 she is Coordinator of the German Sociological Association research network Sociology of Profession. She is visiting professor at University of St. Gallen and strongly connected to several German Institutes of Sociology, the Institute of Religion, Culture and World Affairs (CURA) at Boston University and the Work, Interaction and Technology (WIT) Research Centre at King's College London. Her domains are Sociology of Knowledge, Sociology of Everyday Life (Posttraditional Communities), Consumerism, Professionalism, Competence and Qualitative Methods. Her major interest is to develop a theoretical framework for an sociological approach to competence as a necessary ressource for acting in modern society.
